Chef's Tip
Use your hands to mash up the beans, and then bind everything together!
Always wash your hands very well before cooking or baking.
Method
Step 1: Mash the Beans (The Base)
Empty the drained beans into a large mixing bowl. Hand a potato masher to the kids and let them take turns smashing the beans.
Step 2: Mix the Flavors
Stir in the finely diced onion, garlic, cumin, smoked paprika, coriander, and salt. Mix well until everything is evenly coloured by the spices.
Step 3: Bind the Mixture
Sprinkle in the flour or breadcrumbs and stir tightly. The mixture should feel like a thick, moldable dough. If it feels too sticky to hold, add 1 more tablespoon of flour.
Step 4: Divide and Shape
Divide the mixture into 5 equal portions. Roll the portion into a smooth ball, then gently press down onto a clean chopping board or plate to shape it into a flat, round patty (about 2cm thick). Dust with flour to stop it sticking.
Step 5: Master the Flip (The Main Lesson)
- Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large frying pan over medium heat.
- Carefully slide the patties into the pan. Fry for 4 to 5 minutes without touching them. Letting a nice, brown crust form on the bottom is what locks the burger together.
- The Turning Test: Completely under the patty. Support the top lightly with a fork or back of a spoon, lift, and smoothly roll it over away from themselves to avoid oil splashes.
- Cook for another 4 minutes on the second side until crisp and hot through.
Step 6: Assemble
Slide each burger safely out of the pan and place it straight into a split burger bun.
💡 Teacher's Lesson Tips for "The Perfect Turn"
- The "Patience" Rule: Don't try to turn the bean burger too early, it will crumble. The crust acts like glue!
